Rearranging the House

Our house was a scurry of activity during the weeks and months prior to Jesse's birth (read The Story of Jesse's Birth) but Barney barely took notice. We tore out and relayed all the carpeting, stripped wallpaper and repainted every room, moved our waterbed into the old den and assembled new baby furniture into our old bedroom. The day we drained the waterbed, Barney had curled up on it for a nap. I am never in a rush, so I simply start the siphon and wander off for a couple hours, checking on the progress once or twice. Barney was surprised (for a second or two before regaining his 'cool cat' composure) to fall asleep on a warm waterbed cover and wake up down inside the empty shell. He stopped in his tracks, then lept up and over the edge, then (of course) pretended that such things happen all the time.

The new Baby

We had several months with the new baby before we had to worry about any household dangers. During this time, Barney treated the new baby Jesse with total indifference. My mom was panic stricken, repeating the old-wives tale that the cat is guarenteed to climb up into the baby's crib (seeking the warmth of the child's breath), curl over his face and take a nap. "The baby will suffocate to DEATH!", she explained, while we feigned our most sincere concerned look. When we neither locked the jealous murderer in the garage or put him to sleep outright, we were treated with concern. Did we really LOVE our new baby?
