New Haven Ravens (May 1997) |
|
Durham Bulls (June 1997) |
|
This was a lonely game on a cold Long Island night. I drove over
after teaching all day in Stamford, and arrived back at my hotel late
and tired. It was threatening rain and windy. The stadium was
historic and the fans were knowledgeable and sparse, and the Raven
was memorable, just don't look into his eyes.

I went "baseball crazy" in the summer of 1997, fifteen
games in six months. In Raleigh-Durham, NC I was sad to learn that
the 'historic' ballpark from the Kevin Costner movie had just been
replaced by this snazzy number. The Bull was, of course, a total ham. |

Phoenix Firebird (July 1997) |
|
Baltimore Oriole (Sept 1997) |
|
During my July visit, I stopped in Scottsdale to see the Firebirds.
It was their last season as they relocated to Fresno when the
Diamondbacks arrived. The picture was fuzzy, but a wonderful memory.
The stadium is now used only for spring training and rookie league
games. It was immediately apparent to me why the new Phoenix ballpark
would offer air conditioning. |

I had a delightful September baseball weekend, when a week in Los
Angeles was followed by one in Washington, DC. I went to the Dodgers
game Friday night (Hideo Nomo was pitching) then caught the red-eye
to Florida. On Sunday morning I was on my way to BWI and in the
stands to see the Sunday Matinee against the Tigers. Camden Yards was
spectacular, and I had to sit back and ponder my life as a member of
the 'jet set'. |
