Sorry, no pictures this year. It was our first Halloween in Florida
but Jesse ended up sick. He was in second grade, making some new
friends and enjoying his all-time favorite teacher Mrs Wilt. With
Halloween on a Wednesday, and Dave in away in Philadelphia for the
week, it was a relief for Lyn when Jesse turned up sick enough to
miss school and instead be a helper by passing out the candy.
Dave's trip to Philadelphia was very memorable, as the Flyers were
home on Halloween night playing the Tampa Bay Lightning. He went to
the game, bought a 'single ticket' and made friends with all the
hockey fans in his section. Lots of fans showed up in costume, most
with hockey themes.
But it was Dave's first ever trip to the Philadelphia office and on
Sunday night, lost in the dark and trying to find his hotel, he
struck a deer while driving slowly on a freeway access road abutting
a small dark woods. Neither the car nor the deer were damaged, but
Dave still vividly describes the "Big Deer Eyes" pushed
against his drivers side window. Later in the week, he narrowly
missed a head on collision as a driver jumped the median (no divider)
and drove head-on just missing Dave in rush hour traffic. That Friday
night, while driving everybody home from the airport after picking
him up, he vividly described the other driver, right down to her
eyeglass style and lipstick shade (it was THAT close). As he told the
story, a pedestrian stepped out into the path of our van and Dave
swerved aside and slammed on the brakes but still clipped her! Three
collisions in one week, as we all watched her sail away like a
children's toy top. We called for police and an ambulance, but when
we circled back, she had literally disappeared. Four policemen with
big flashlights hunted through bushes and shadows but she was gone
without a trace. The general consensus was that she didn't want to
stick around to explain something (whatever that was) and that she
was probably 'feeling no pain'. Everybody laughed at the notion of
this anonymous woman waking up in the morning trying to remember the
party from last night and saying she felt 'like I was hit by a
truck'. Dave was more worried, but these guys had obviously
seen it all.
It was a very strange Halloween indeed! |
