Jesse has
started an exciting new path in his home school routine. After his
yearly evaluation test at the end of last school year we were told
that he had tested above the college sophomore level in all areas of
study. It was suggested to us that we look into a program
developed between the local school district and the community college
that allows high school students the chance to take college courses
as part of tier curriculum. Because we are legally part of the local
school district and they monitor our yearly homeschool progress we
are allowed all the rights and privilege of the "normal"
public school student.
Lyn spent some time assessing the program to make sure it was not
another public school boondoggle and was surprised and pleased
with what she found. It seems fully accredited college courses
with credits that will apply to a college degree are offered to honor
students to take with their regular high school work load. The
classes are the same classes that every other student takes at the
college. And they are free! The homeshool student is allowed
to take ANY class where as the public school student can only
take those courses approved by the district. For once, our school tax
dollars are benefiting us.
Jesse had to pass the entrance exams for the college and did so with
a better score than most of the High School Seniors entering the
college that fall. He took one class in the Fall semester to
get used to the whole college experience. Composition.
The Comp class involved reading and writing about two journal
articles every week and handing in a variety of different
compositions papers every other week. You can see the products
from the class by going to our home school web
page. He did very well, despite having a less then adequate
teacher. The class was set up by the English Faculity so at least he
had the benefit of a well researched and educational class outline.
After that he was pretty much on his own for educational experiences.
He came out best in class, and is looking forward to taking two
classes next semester. Intermediate Algebra and Spanish...Muy bueno!
