We
woke up in Charlottetown, PEI, and visited the University to get UPEI
Shirts. We visited the Provence House, the Charlottetown hall, and
heard the story of the original meeting of confederation for Canada.
To an American, this building in the provincial capital is the
equivalent of Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Although Canada's
history was not of breaking away from England, but of trying to find
a way to join together "Upper" and "Lower" Canada
against a hostile USA. It was sobering to think that all of those
Citadels were built to guard against marauding Americans. A nice statue
honoring the Canadian Armed Forces sits in front.
The Burger King is offering "poutines", a regional treat (I
guess) of french fries smothered in brown gravy. We tried them twice,
but never quite got ourselves hooked on them. |

We
headed to the north coast, along the St Lawrence, and saw the
beautiful and famous red beaches (and shot rolls of film). The
weather was beautiful and the sounds of the wind, the surf, the
seabirds were pleasant and relaxing to us all.
We stopped in Cavendish, made famous by the series of books, later
movies and videos about the famous "Anne
of Green Gables". The picturesque little town kept our
interest for almost an hour, but was jam-packed by the Japanese
honeymoon couples we had read about.

The
boats and lighthouses, docks and cottages were all so picturesque.
We were heading to <?> St George and the ferry to New Glasgow,
NB when we talked ourselves into a bad decision.
We had wasted a couple hours in San Simeon waiting for a ferry, and
worried about a repeat, so we decided to return to the Confederation
bridge and loop around to New Glasgow instead. |
