I woke up a little late, and Mom had already started packing. Dad was
at work, but he was supposed to be done around 12. Today we would be
leaving Philadelphia and we would be sleeping in New York. We rested
some, and Dad called, saying that he was being kept late. Mom and I
had lunch at the hotel and we left at 2:00 once dad got back.
The first major stop was at St. Neumann's church, where,
supposedly, St. Neumann's body was kept in a glass box for all to
see. Of course, this fact caused my Dad to form this trip, possibly
just for that (kidding, we've actually wanted to see NY and get it
over with for awhile). Well, he was there all right. Part of me let
out a long "Ewwwwwwww" and the other part (The 12-year old
boy part) went "Cool!". His face and hands were covered
with wax masks and the rest of his body was covered with a robe, so
you weren't actually able to see the bones. If you wanted to know if
this was good or bad, it would depend on whom you asked. Along the
walls of the church were stained glass windows depicting Neumann and
his exploits. We read a couple of articles about the church, than
took our leave, all debating the customs of Catholics. I fell asleep
in the car, but was awoken when I conked my head on the door.
We were parked in an abandoned parking lot with a splendid view of
NYC, a good distance away. We got out the long lens and took a bunch
of pictures of the city. It was cold and windy, so I ran back to the
car and put on a sweatshirt and my coat, but it didn't help all that
much. We drove a few blocks back to a science center and took a few
more pictures from there. We continued down the road till we hit
Liberty Park, where we took a few more pictures. The wind was now
horrible, and I could only feel a burning sting in my hands and
cheeks. I ran back to the car after using the facilities and tried to
warm up. I fell asleep again and when I woke up, it was dark out.
Apparently, we were in Hoboken NJ, and I had dozed off in deep
thought for awhile. We drove down a little hill and got out of the
car. It was still stingingly cold, but I kept my suffering mainly to
myself (How often does that happen?). Across the river, lights from
the large buildings of NYC lit up the sky and water. We took pictures
of it, having to set the camera on the concrete due to the darkness.
We stood and took in the beauty of the image for a few more moments,
then headed back to the car. I mentioned (Hah!) I was feeling ill
and needed something to eat. The only food place in our immediate
area was White Castle, a place that sold food designed to make you
ill. Eventually we decided it was the best we could get, so my
parents ordered me 4 pseudo-burgers to go. Although White Castle
burgers are only about 1/5 the size of a regular burger, they are
dipped in 3 times as much grease, giving them the nickname
"belly-bombers". Surprisingly, I felt a little better after
2 of them and a few sips of "shake". We headed into NYC,
watching everything. Everyone in a car was honking at everyone else,
which increased my headache. We drove up and down Broadway and a few
others, enjoying the sights. We drove by Central Park, and then
headed out to our hotel at Laguardia Airport. Once there, I barely
made it up to my bed (Another Hah! Couch bed...) and fell right asleep.
