After
our first night dinner at Fisherman's Wharf, we were all too sick to
be very active. Lyn and Jesse spent one day at the hotel, then one
day driving down to San Jose. They spent the third day in the hotel.
Dave attended his conference each day, but then skipped the dinners
(a night of dancing was just too much) and went to bed early. Dinner
all three nights was Chinese take-out with hot and sour soup, NyQuil,
and long hours of restful sleep. We finally all started to kick our
colds and slight fevers by the time we hit Oregon |

Lyn and Jesse took the car (with the Hertz Neverlost) down to the
campus of Stanford and to the
tech museum in San Jose. Jesse has the grades and intelligence to get
into a world class college like Stanford and, at age thirteen, is old
enough to at least start to think about such things. Lyn and Jesse
received the campus walking tour but the admissions office would not
agree to host them for even a short visit (thanks for nothing).
They kept their eyes peeled but never saw Chelsea Clinton. |

After visiting Stanford, Lyn and Jesse headed down to the San
Jose Tech Museum. Jesse really enjoyed himself and was impressed
with the technology on display. It was all very accessible and very
demystified for the visitors. An excellent use of our time. |

We headed out after the day's schedule was finished on Thursday. Dave
wanted to take everybody over to nearby Colma, the city of the dead.
Years ago, San Francisco closed all city cemeteries and relocated all
remains to the nearby city of Colma (farmland back then).
Dave's gravespotting hobby allowed him to show off the previously
visited grave of Joe DiMaggio. On this trip, we found and
photographed the crypt of Levi Strauss
of blue jeans fame. |

When
the conference ended after lunch on Friday, we had enough time to
visit with our old friend Bruce. It had been a couple years since his
visit to us in Florida. We were scheduled to drive north and spend
the night in nearby Santa Rosa.
Bruce works as an independent consultant to major power plants and he
always has a long list of delightful stories. He is such a good
influence on Jesse, as an example of how you can apply your
intelligence to a challenging and even lucrative job without having
to sell out your soul or your conscience.
We headed for lunch at the nearby San Carlos airport and visited the aviation
museum which was another of Bruce's interest (along with being
fluent in French, maintaining his hobby as a marathon bicyclist, and
sleeping in the back of a van for three months every year). Friends
like Bruce are the spice of our lives and a delight every time we get
to meet with him. |
