Santa Rosa to Eureka

This was our day on Northern California's "Redwood Coast". We circled Santa Rosa but did not stop to visit any of its attractions, then drove north on US 101 all the way to Eureka. On the way we stopped at each of the small groves of protected Redwoods.

We all grew up in the midwest, so each of these tree groves were breathtaking. It was impossible to stand before these millennia old gargantuan trees and imagine a person so self-centered and money-hungry as to see only their value as sawed up fence pickets. But, alas, for some, the American dream is built upon monstrous tree stumps.

These pictures capture only the slightest essence of the giant redwoods. The cool moist air and damp shade and unique aroma cannot be shown. In each picture there is something to show your eye the immense scale of the trees, yet it is still impossible to comprehend.

We spent several hours traversing the Humboldt Redwoods State Park area, continually pulling over to jump out of the car to take it all in. Yes, we did stop at the tourist stop for the drive-through tree near Myers Flat, California (but we couldn't find Yogi Bear). What a marvelous day.
