Spring Training and Bryce Canyon

Working On It
One Big Project!

We knew it was time to leave Utah and find a new job elsewhere. Dave had always wanted to see spring training baseball and loved warm weather resorts. So we put for vacation week around Easter, drove down to look at nearby Phoenix for its quality of life (lots of high-tech jobs there) and take in some baseball, too. It was the last week of Spring Training, the teams actually broke camp during our stay, so we made a beeline to the ball field. We then took the tourist route back, stopping at the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, and Bryce Canyon.

Phoenix at Easter

We hated Utah and visited Phoenix just to imagine living there. We found the April weather,  palm trees and swimming pools all exotic and desirable, but we did not like the low humidity (something most people love about Arizona).

The traffic was very bad in Phoenix, and particularly so near the stadiums around gametime. Like Utah, we were all constantly dehydrated with frequent stops at the quickee mart to get juice and soda.

Spring Training Baseball

The highlight was seeing our first ever spring training baseball games. We saw games for both Oakland and the California Angels. The pink southwest adobe motif was exotic to us as were all the palm trees. But the desert was dry and we were reminded that it was the low humidity that we disliked most about Utah. If Phoenix was this uncomfortably dry in April, what must it be like in July?

We cooked at the first game, but learned our lesson. For the second game we filled up on fluids ahead of time, wore lots of sunscreen, kept our hats and sunglasses on at all times, and really enjoyed ourselves. There were only four major league teams in Arizona at this time with 2 more arriving with the Diamondbacks expansion and 2 more relocating to Arizona in 2003.

We enjoyed the games a lot, so much so that we decided to move to Florida specifically to have spring training baseball available and "in the neighborhood" for years to come.
